Pika Wiya Learning Centre

Situated at the Pika Wiya Aboriginal Health Service at Port Augusta, our Centre aims to provide a culturally appropriate learning facility for Aboriginal people training as Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses , Aboriginal Health Workers and Allied Health professionals.

The Centre's emphasis is on providing culturally appropriate academic, personal, peer, social and administrative support to enhance the Aboriginal graduate outcomes of students studying at University or TAFE institutions.

The Aboriginal Coordinator is located at the Centre to support and facilitate the students to overcome the variety of barriers to successful study by:

Providing one on one academic tuition
Providing group tuition Facilitating ATAS tuition
Providing confidential personal counselling
Providing administrative and financial support networks for students
Promoting peer support and role modelling within the Centre and in the Port Augusta community
Acting as an advocate for students to training providers, community organisations, employment organizations
Providing access to information technology resources
Providing access to library resources
Promoting a culturally safe environment

The Training Centre can also provide an advocacy avenue for students to express issues regarding pedagogy and curriculum to their respective training providers.
Our Centre creates a positive environment for role modelling to prospective Aboriginal students and contributes to enhancing a collective of Aboriginal health professionals in the Port Augusta region.
